Location and Access to the Caldera Blanca

The hike to the Caldera Blanca starts from the small village of Tinajo, located on the island of Lanzarote in the Canary Islands. To get to the parking lot of Caldera Blanca, you must be located on the main road of Tinajo and from there, turn off towards the village of Mancha Blanca. If you come from Playa Blanca, you will cross the Timanfaya National Park to reach the beginning of a narrower road that leads to the trail.

Caldera Blanca, also known as Cráter Blanco, is an extinct volcano formed by a single volcanic eruption. It is known for being the largest crater of the islands, with a diameter of 1200 meters.

This volcano is more than two million years old and is one of the main high points of the volcanic chains in the center of the island.

Hiking Tips

The route starts at the parking lot at the foot of the Caldera and continues uphill to skirt the entire crater of the volcano. The trail isa 9.3 km circular route that is considered moderately challenging and takes an average of 3 h 4 min to complete. Remember that the ascent is gradual but it can be very windy at the top of the crater. Route Experience

This is a very popular area for hiking, so you are likely to meet others as you explore. The Caldera Blanca route crosses an area of volcanic badlands abundant in lava forms that are the product of eruptions that occurred between 1730 and 1736.
