The José Saramago House Museum was the writer’s residence during the last years of his life and is where he wrote some of his most important works. During the visit, you will be able to explore the different rooms of the house, which include its study, its library and its living room. In addition, the house is surrounded by a beautiful garden overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, a place Saramago described as his “refuge”.

History of the José Saramago House Museum

José Saramago moved to Lanzarote in 1992, after his novel “The Gospel According to Jesus Christ” was censored by the Portuguese government. In Lanzarote, Saramago found the peace and inspiration to continue his work. After his death in 2010, his home was converted into a museum to preserve his legacy and promote his work.

The José Saramago House Museum is open from Monday to Saturday, with special hours on Thursdays.
