Where is the Cueva de los Verdes?

The Cueva de los Verdes is located in the north of the island of Lanzarote, near the town of Haría. To get there, you can consult this map.

What to see in the Cueva de los Verdes?

The Cueva de los Verdes is part of an extensive system of volcanic tubes that formed about 4,000 years ago, when the Corona Volcano erupted. The lava that flowed into the ocean created a lava tunnel more than 6 kilometers long, of which 2 kilometers can be visited. During the visit, you will be able to admire the impressive lava formations, stalactites and stalagmites, and the vibrant colors of the cave walls, which vary from volcanic black to rust red and bright white. In addition, the Cueva de los Verdes is famous for its exceptional acoustics, and often hosts concerts and live music shows. Imagine the experience of listening to music in this magical underground environment.

History of the Cueva de los Verdes

The Cueva de los Verdes is not only a wonderful natural spectacle, but it also has a rich history. In the past, the caves were used by the island’s original inhabitants, the Majos, as a refuge to protect themselves from pirates and invaders who frequently raided the island. During the volcanic eruptions of the 18th century, the inhabitants of Lanzarote also used the caves as a refuge. The constant temperature inside the caves, which stays between 18 and 20 degrees throughout the year, provided a safe and comfortable place to hide. In the 19th century, the Cueva de los Verdes became a tourist attraction. It was in 1964 when the Cabildo of Lanzarote decided to open a part of the cave to the public, with a route of approximately 2 kilometres.
