History of the Salinas de Janubio
The Salinas de Janubio, began to be built in 1895 by Mr. Vicente Lleó Benlliure, taking advantage of the natural conditions of a lagoon created by the eruption of Timanfaya in the eighteenth century. This lagoon, originally the Puerto Real de Janubio, is more than 1 km in circumference and has a depth of between 2 and 7 meters. The construction of the salt mines was completed in 1945 by Mr. Jaime Lleó Mira, the Cerdeña family and Mr. Ginés Díaz, reaching a total of 450,000 square meters and an initial production of more than ten thousand tons of saltof which more than 20% is still produced today.
