History of Las Grietas de Lanzarote

Las Grietas are an impressive formation about 600 meters high on the slope of Montaña Blanca.
These cracks are the product of the natural forces that have shaped the island over millennia.
Its formation is due to the combination of the action of water and volcanic activity, which has been wearing away and separating the solidified lava, creating natural passageways.
There are three main crevices, all located in close proximity to each other, each offering a unique experience for explorers.

Formation of the Volcanic Cracks

Las Grietas are a clear example of the volcanic origin of Lanzarote.
They formed when lava from a volcanic eruption cooled faster than the rock on which it was sitting, creating fissures and cracks.
Water erosion over the years has accentuated these cracks, giving them the current appearance of narrow, deep canyons.

How to get to Las Grietas in Lanzarote

Since Las Grietas is not a massive tourist destination, you won’t find specific signage on the road, so it’s important to follow these directions:

1. Main Route: Take the LZ-35 road, which connects the towns of San Bartolomé and Tías.
2. Parking: Look for an unpaved and unmarked parking lot near the road.
   Leave your car there.
3. Access: Cross the tunnel on the other side of the road and follow the path that ascends up the mountain.
   It is a short and easy hike.
4. Arrival: The trail will take you directly to Las Grietas, where you can delve into these fascinating natural formations.
   You can also climb up the side to the top of the crevasses for a panoramic view.

From the top, you will enjoy spectacular views of the island, ranging from Puerto del Carmen to Arrecife.
